Check it out - my first-ever, finished two-page mock up done in InDesign! It also includes a self-made anti text and driving ad which I'm quite proud of. I must say it is pretty neat to finally produce something with the nifty tools we've been learning - it is, after all, what I came back to school for.

Cooler still is that fact that I can now say stuff like, "man, InDesign is way better than Quark" and actually know what I'm talking about and why!

Final Typography Project

I don't mean to toot my own horn too much, but I'm too stoked with my final project for Typography to not share it. Using the front page of an existing newspaper as a template, the objective was to create our own "above the fold" layout. I chose to be super-creative (and somewhat festive), going with a Die Hard theme - 'tis the season, after all. See if you can catch all the references contained within (some are more obvious than others)!

I'll help you out with one: the phone number spells out "323 F-U-C K-Y-O-U".
I thought it was appropriate, given the association. Hope ya digs!

Between 1999 and 2000, Canadian singer / songwriter Hawksley Workman published a book of letters to a fictional lover by the name of "Isadora". An avid fan since the release of his first album, "For Him and the Girls," I am now working to create over one hundred and fifty conceptualized representations of Isadora - [almost] completely free of reference; based on the songs and poems of Hawksley Workman. This is an idea I've had in the back of my mind for quite a while now; I decided it was time I got to work on it.

She was writing a book on (among other things) dispelling the myth of the stereotypical man-hating lesbian, and she asked me to create the illustrations! As I understand it, these will soon be copyrighted through the University of Toronto Press, so I figured I should post 'em now before it's too late.

Coming to you now from the "holy shit!" and "that was fast" files is this: one of my Vampirella sketch cards going for -what I believe is- the highest price a card of mine ever has on eBay! Today (Friday) is also the first day after the set went live, so it seems the seller really didn't waste any time in his/her attempt to cash in. On the other hand, another Vampirella card of mine is going for $0.99 so I guess it all depends on who likes what. Just thought it was nifty and that I'd share.

Drawing @ The Bracebridge Skate-Park

I finally got to try my hand at some live art at the skate park in Bracebridge this past Saturday. Nothing special - just a couple of quick doodles. I'm happiest with the zombie (of course), and I successfully managed to misspell "disintegrations". Still, fun times; hopefully be back soon with some more creative designs. Also, if you ever want to wear out a Magnum Sharpie in less than an hour, this is how you do it.

Ottawa Small-Press Book Fair

Successful Saturday at the Ottawa Small-Press Book Fair! The fair was held at the Jack Purcell community centre between noon and 5pm on Saturday, June 25th and there was actually quite a good turnout! Here are a couple of shots - the first is me with my good pal, Sean Moreland. Sean was selling copies of his book, Postscripts to Darkness (for which I did two illustrations), as well as a couple of his other independently published works.
The second picture is me with Jesse Dangerously - co-founder of the "nerdcore" hip-hop movement along with MC Frontalot and MC Chris. Amazingly friendly guy - it was a pleasure meeting him.

Brave Astronaut Album Cover 2

Here are the finished images for the newest album coming soon from Brave Astronaut. I was asked to draw the band fighting off hordes of angry, sixties-style robots in an apocalyptic landscape. I'm happy to report that they were stoked with the way it all turned out. I created the image on 11x17 paper, which also gives them the option of using it for a poster. Here are samples of what the poster and album cover will look like - with and without the logo - as well as the original finished line-art.
